Unfortunately, statistics on alcohol consumption in Russia are incomplete since they do not capture consumption of illegal and home‐brewed alcohol and non‐beverage alcohols such as medicinal tinctures. Nemtsov and other scholars have produced alternative estimates of the ethanol consumption in Russia [1, 4, 7, 11, 20, 21]. However, for our purposes these estimates are unsuitable as they involve an element https://sober-home.org/12-steps-of-aa-what-are-the-principles-of-aa/ of circularity being partly dependent on mortality from alcohol‐related causes. The same mortality components were seen to be important drivers of sharp LE fluctuations of the mid‐80s and the 1990s [10]. Among other measures for restricting alcohol consumption is the restriction of alcohol selling times. In Moscow, alcohol is not sold between 11pm and 8am, and in St Petersburg between 10pm and 11am.
Relationship to alcohol policy in Russia
By comparison, only 32.2% of people in Africa and 33.1% of people in South-East Asia (India, North Korea, Sri Lanka, etc.) drank in 2016. What’s more, 94.9% of people in the Eastern Mediterranean region (Egypt, Iran, Yemen, etc.) have abstained from alcohol their entire lives. Alcohol consumption, it should be noted, is illegal in many Eastern Mediterranean countries, at least for Muslims. Perhaps surprisingly, a 2018 report from the World Health Organization concluded that 57% of the Earth’s adult population (in other words, 3.113 billion of the people aged 15 or older) had not consumed alcoholic beverages in 2016. In fact, 44% of global adults had never consumed alcoholic beverages at all. Most countries in Europe have set 18 as the minimum age to purchase alcohol.

Since their brains are still maturing, alcohol may harm their memory and long-term thinking. Alcohol may also cause complications such as liver failure and hormonal imbalance in minors due to the constant changes in their bodies as they mature, especially during puberty. Of all alcohol‐attributable causes, acute alcohol poisoning is the one most obviously related to episodes of harmful drinking as by definition it is caused by fatally high blood alcohol concentrations. Alcohol, as a central component of life in Russia, has been commented on, by Russians and by travellers from other countries, since at least the tenth century AD. There are many accounts of the very high prevalence of drinking to the point of unconsciousness by both men and women, of all social strata, to a level that amazed writers from other European countries. By the nineteenth century, however, when statistics with at least some degree of validity became available, the level of alcohol consumption was actually lower than in many other countries.
‘We are new Russians’: How a hard-drinking nation curbed its alcohol use
With years of experience tasting and evaluating various beers, I love to share my opinions and insights with others and I am always eager to engage in lively discussions about my favorite beverage. Public intoxication is also considered a crime, and anyone caught misbehaving or acting rowdy in public shall be asked to pay up to 1000 Rubles.
- Since you can, you’ll see commuters sitting on trains or even sleeping where everyone can see them before driving again.
- Last week, police released a video of a police raid in a factory that was manufacturing illegal vodka just outside Moscow.
- It is against such a background that this commentary overviews the pattern of drinking in Russia and how it has changed in recent years.
- At no time were figures for illegally produced alcohol, or samogon, reported, even though, according to some researchers, this may have accounted for 50% of total consumption.
Compared to the mid‐90s, the share of population consuming spirits has declined while the share of beer drinkers has increased [36, 37]. This happens partly because younger cohorts of Russians tend to drink less vodka and more beer compared to their older counterparts [37]. An analysis on married/cohabiting men aged 21–49 years, suggested a decline of average quantity of ethanol consumed on a typical day of consumption by about one‐third between 2002–2007 and 2008–2012 [38]. Observed changes in life expectancy (LE) as compared to changes predicted by mortality from alcohol poisonings for the periods 1965–1984, 1984–2003, 2003–2017. “At a young age, alcohol not only affects health but also behavior, including future habits of alcohol consumption,” a ministry spokesperson was cited as saying by Interfax on Friday in explaining the proposal to raise the drinking age.
Sales of illegally distilled spirits in Russia have been a deadly health problem. In one of the worst cases in recent times, 78 people died in the Siberian city of Irkutsk in 2016 after drinking tainted moonshine. https://sober-house.net/barbiturates-usage-effects-and-signs-of/ Illegal alcohol sales usually take the form of homemade distilled spirits or legally made products sold after hours. Russian law prohibits any off-licence sales in corner stores or grocery stores past 11 p.m.
Therefore, Canada does recognize MLDA research and a need for a minimum drinking age in general even if not as high as other places, such as in the U.S. One of Russia’s major laws is to prevent the spread of underage drinking among minors. Anyone caught breaking this law – Whether it’s a minor getting caught drinking or an adult lending alcohol to a minor – Will receive punishment, which includes up to six years of imprisonment. The offender should also pay at least 2,000 Rubles and “correctional labor” in a Russian prison. Of great importance was the impetus that this dramatic increase in illicit production had for long-term consumption trends.
The youngest legal drinking age in the world is 15, with both Mali and the Central African Republic allowing folks to drink at that time. Seven countries do not have a government-mandated drinking age, while 11 countries ban the consumption of booze entirely. While 21 years old is the standard for most of the United States (looking at you, Wisconsin), many consumers across the world have earlier introductions to alcohol.
It’s not uncommon for European nations to serve alcohol to a child as young as five years old. However, the drinking age in the UK is 18, which is when young people can legally drink or buy alcohol in public. Apparently, studies concerning MLDAs demonstrated crash reductions and less alcohol consumption related to raised MLDAs. Reports also revealed possible decreased long-term effects otherwise caused by drinking too much, especially when driving.
Visual inspection of the association between LE and SDR for alcohol poisoning (Figure (Figure1)1) shows a remarkable mirroring of the trends that can be described as having a ‘butterfly’ shape. However, since the late 2000s, the symmetry between the LE and the alcohol poisoning trends became less apparent. In particular, despite a slowdown in the decline in alcohol poisoning in 2010–2015, life expectancy continued to rise without interruption. To see to what extent our results depend upon the choice of alcohol poisoning as a proxy for the prevalence of harmful drinking, we carried out a sensitivity analysis that included two additional models. In the first model, we replaced alcohol poisoning by the group of other causes directly linked to alcohol that includes ‘Mental and behavioural disorders due to use of alcohol’ and ‘Alcoholic liver disease’.
In other cities, the general rule is that alcohol is not sold between 11pm and 8am, although it is up to local governments to decide on that. Shops are usually very keen on following these rules, as their alcohol license can be revoked if they do not follow them. It is still possible to order alcohol from bars and restaurants after this time.
It’s hard to predict if an ID check will be done at the entrance or at the bar, so it’s best to always have some form of identification at all times. Don’t worry if it’s not in Russian, as long as the date of birth is clear, it shouldn’t be a problem. Most Russians believe that the minimum drinking age in the country is 18 years. However, there are no laws https://sober-house.org/adult-children-of-alcoholics-7-signs-and-effects/ or regulations prohibiting minors from taking alcoholic drinks. On the contrary, selling alcohol to persons under the age of 18 years is prohibited by federal and regional laws and may attract fines and even jail terms. Although the majority of the countries around the world have set the MLDA at 18 years, 16 years is considered the youngest drinking age.
